Election 2016 sausage sizzles

Looking for the best Polling Place this election?

Foxy Owl has you covered

The humble Election Day sausage sizzle is getting a gourmet twist, with schools and churches upping the steaks on their polling day barbecues.

Gourmet sausages, Wagyu snags, juicy steaks, coleslaw, haloumi burgers and organic lollipops are all on the menu this Saturday, with locations around the country pulling out all the stops to provide well-needed sustenance to fussy foodies undertaking their civic duty.

Dr Grant Castner who has set up the online Election Sausage Sizzle Map says “The sausage sizzle is an Australian tradition and many schools and churches are doing something a bit different to attract voters.”

He said “The sausage sizzle is the starting point, but there’s a number of places with international food and some schools have timed their fetes to be on at the same time,”

“They’re trying to cater for the whole day as well, with coffee and breakfast rolls in the morning,

“You need a bit of sustenance, especially while filling out that big senate form. You need something to keep you going,” he said.

Despite many polling places upping the ante on the sausage sizzle, Dr Castner said it wasn’t a case of out-doing the competition, but more just doing what they could to raise money from the broader community.

“It’s a great way to raise funds from a much bigger audience,” he said.

“There’s certainly people trying to promote themselves so there’s a little bit of an aspect of competition, but most of them are really just keen to help out their own school.”

But even though there is a cornucopia of gourmet options to choose from, Dr Castner said he preferred the classic combination the best.

“I’m a bit of a traditionalist. All I need it the sausage, a bit of onion, a bit of tomato sauce and a slice of white bread and I’m all set,” he said.
